As I reflect on my first year at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) in 2024, I am reminded of the countless challenges I faced as a young student navigating a new environment. My name is Nontando Mbanjwa, and I’m a 20-year-old from Donnybrook, eager to share my story. I embarked on a journey to pursue a degree in Health Sciences, specializing in Homeopathy, and little did I know that this would be a transformative experience that would shape me into the person I am today.
The Struggle is Real
My first year in varsity was not easy. For the first two weeks, I had to stay with friends because I didn’t have a place to stay, and it was hard for me to attend classes. But after I finally found a residence, I thought things would get better. Unfortunately, I was mugged by three ladies who took my money and phones. It was a tough time, especially since I had to start writing my March tests around that time. Despite these challenges, I was determined to succeed and make the most of my time at DUT.
Academic Rigor

The academic workload was another significant challenge I faced. As a Health Sciences student, I was expected to handle a heavy course load, which included complex subjects like anatomy, physiology, physical sciences, etc. The amount of work was overwhelming at times, and I often found myself struggling to keep up. However, I was determined to excel, and I spent countless hours studying.
Lessons Learned
Despite the challenges, my first year in varsity was also a time of tremendous growth and learning. I learned the importance of time management, prioritization, and self-discipline. I also developed essential skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication. But most importantly, I learned to be resilient and adaptable, to navigate uncertain situations. There were times when I felt overwhelmed, and I found myself crying because of the situations I faced. But I didn’t let those tears define me. Instead, I used them as a reminder that I was strong and that I could overcome anything.

As I reflect on my journey, I am reminded that I am a young, dedicated, and strong woman. I have faced challenges that would have broken a lesser person, but I have emerged stronger and more determined. I am proud of the person I am becoming, and I know that I have the power to achieve my dreams. I am a testament to the fact that with hard work, perseverance, and faith, anything is possible.
Conclusion
As I look back on my first year in varsity in 2024, I am proud of the person I have become. I have grown, learned, and overcome challenges that seemed insurmountable at the time. My journey in Health Sciences has just begun, and I am excited to see where it will take me. I pray to God to always be with me as I continue on this journey, guiding me and giving me the strength to persevere until I achieve my goals. To all the young sisters and brothers out there, I want to encourage you to fight and be patient, brave, and determined about your future. Remember, your future is in your hands, and with hard work and perseverance, you can overcome any obstacle. Don’t give up, even when things seem tough. Keep pushing forward, and know that better days are ahead.
